Tusker Launches Team Kenya Campaign With An Ad That Looks A Lot Like Nike's Respect Ad

' Good Artists copy, great artists steal' - Steve Jobs

Kenya Breweries Limited, through its flagship brand Tusker Lager launched the ‘Team Kenya’campaign. Tusker Team Kenya is a campaign aimed at enhancing patriotism amongst Kenyans by celebrating various groundbreaking moments as well as achievements made by Kenyans.
“I feel truly proud today that 93 years on, the Tusker brand’s legacy continues to shine, exhibiting a national symbol of togetherness and real sense of pride that I believe will rally all Kenyans in one powerful cause. The cause of celebrating our heroes,” said Arianne Okong’o, Tusker Marketing Manager during the launch.
During the campaign Tusker will be asking all patriotic Kenyans to sign up to the team Kenya platform *896# where they will get to enjoy a sense of camadarie when supporting Kenyans teams during matches. Individuals who sign up also stand a chance of winning various prizes.

But as much as I think the advert is pretty cool,  I still can't shrug off the fact that it looks too much like Nike's Respect Ad that honored the great Derek Jeter. In observation of Derek Jeter's final season, Nike released its "RE2SPECT" ad, having notable figures such as Jay-Z, Billy Crystal, Michael Jordan and Spike Lee tip their hats to the future Hall-of-Famer. The ad later on won

But this is not a rebuke to the creators of the ad but an actual encouragement. As David Ogilvy wrote in his book 'The confessions of an Ad man', he clearly encourages copy writers by telling them that its not a crime to copy which is something that i truly concur with.
